The Indigenous Roots Teacher Education Program (ROOTS)

The ROOTS program is currently seeking American Indian applicants with a strong desire to be teachers and work with American Indian students.

The Indigenous Roots Teacher Education Program (ROOTS) is a distance-delivered program. UNL classes are taught on-line and/or in a hybrid format. ROOTS participants live in their home communities, completing course work, practicum and student teaching semesters in schools that serve American Indian students. Graduates are hired to teach in schools/communities in Northeast Nebraska and throughout the Midwest.

Bachelor’s Degree and/or Initial Certification Program

ROOTS is open to students who have earned an AA or BA/BS degree or have completed at least 42 credits from a community college. All selected participants will sign a pay-back agreement, a requirement of the ROOTS program and the U.S. Department of Education. 

Interested undergraduate or post-bac students can apply to earn certification in Elementary (K-6th grade) or Early Childhood Education (Birth3rd grade). Up to 18 students will be selected to participate. Undergraduates will earn a bachelor’s degree and the Nebraska initial teaching certificate. Post-bac students will earn the Nebraska initial teaching certificate. Participants are eligible for the following benefits:

  •  $1,400 monthly stipend for full-time enrolled students 
  • Course tuition and fees 
  • Book costs 
  • Student fees, test fees, criminal history checks and application fees will be covered or reimbursed 
  • Laptop computer
  • Tutors 
  • Childcare support, if eligible 
  • Participants are eligible to work up to 50% time (20 hours per week) in area schools or other educational settings.
